Surgery: Invasive Treatments for OSA

Another treatment option for Obstructive Sleep Apnea may be considered a bit extreme by many patients, yet for some, undergoing surgery to correct OSA may be a last resort.

Sinus Surgery

Patients who suffer from sinus issues may also suffer from the effects of Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Sinus surgery widens the sinus openings and allows the removal of mucus or diseased tissue for patients who suffer frequent sinus infections. The procedure may be performed endoscopically, using a thin fiberoptic tube (endoscope) inserted through the nostrils. Minimally invasive, this technique allows patients to enjoy a shorter recovery time and less post-operative pain.

UPPP Surgery

One surgical procedure known as UPPP Surgery involves a sort of “reaming” of the patient’s airway through the removal of the tonsils, and part of the soft palate. It is an extremely painful procedure; not to mention being the most complex and invasive of all OSA treatment methods.
Yet, despite the desperate efforts of surgery, studies have shown that in as many as half of all OSA cases, the benefits of surgery diminish or disappear within five to ten years. Before undergoing any surgical procedures for OSA relief, it is advised that patients seek out several professional opinions and learn as much as possible about the risks, benefits, and success rates of the suggested procedure.
